RISE tracks your sleep using one of three detection modes: automatic phone motion-based sleep detection, mattress tracking, or wearable data. By default, RISE uses automatic phone motion — no wearable or extra setup required. You can switch between modes to find what works best for you.
What are the three sleep detection modes?
- Automatic phone motion-based sleep detection. RISE uses your phone's motion, steps, and screen activity to estimate when you fell asleep and woke up. This is the default mode and runs passively — keep your phone nearby while you sleep, whether that's on your nightstand, on the mattress next to you, or on your pillow. This mode is also called "Nightstand" on the Sleep Detection panel in the app.
- Mattress tracking. RISE's algorithm interprets mattress movement to estimate when you're asleep. Place your phone on the mattress near your body but not under your pillow. You need to start mattress tracking each night before bed — unlike phone motion, it doesn't run automatically. If you forget, RISE falls back to automatic phone motion detection. You can access mattress tracking from the Zz Sleep Detection button on the home screen or from the Tools tab.
- Wearable data. RISE pulls sleep data from connected wearables such as Apple Watch, Oura Ring, Garmin, or Fitbit. On iPhone, wearable data syncs through Apple Health. On Android, wearable data syncs through Health Connect or a direct integration.
Using a wearable is a good option if you want to keep your phone outside the bedroom. A wearable can also be more accurate if you tend to put your phone down well before you fall asleep, since RISE may count that idle time as sleep.
How do I switch my sleep detection mode?
On the RISE home screen, tap the Zz Sleep Detection button. This opens the Sleep Detection panel where you can choose between Nightstand (phone motion) and Mattress Detection. Mattress tracking is also accessible from the Toolstab.
To connect a wearable, go to Profile > Data Sources and set up your wearable through Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android). If a wearable is connected and has sent sleep data, RISE will use it automatically.
How do I prioritize my sleep data sources?
If you use multiple devices or apps that write sleep data to Apple Health (iPhone) or Health Connect (Android), you can tell RISE which source to prioritize:
- Open the RISE app and tap your Profile icon in the top right.
- Tap Data Sources.
- At the top, you'll see a list of connected sleep sources. Tap and hold a source, then drag it up or down to change its priority.
RISE will use data from the highest-priority source first. If that source doesn't have data for a given night, RISE falls back to the next source in the list.
What if my sleep data looks wrong?
If RISE recorded your sleep time incorrectly, you can edit it:
- Open the RISE app and go to the Progress tab.
- Toggle on Sleep Times.
- Tap on the night you want to correct and adjust the sleep and wake times.
If your sleep data is consistently off, try switching to a different detection mode or connecting a wearable.
